Learning Objectives

1

Understand how distance from a light source changes shadow size

2

Experiment with moving objects to observe shadow changes

3

Develop curiosity about God's amazing creation of light

John 8:12

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as light can change shadows, Jesus changes our spiritual darkness

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • White wall or screen
  • Various small objects (toy animals, blocks)
  • Dark room or space

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned how shadows form when objects block light. Today, we'll discover something exciting about shadows!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about making shadows yesterday?
2Teaching (5 min)

Let's explore how moving objects changes their shadows. When an object is close to the light, its shadow looks BIG! When it moves away, the shadow gets SMALLER.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light travels in straight lines
  • Objects block light to create shadows
  • Distance changes shadow size
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you guess what might make a big shadow?
  • What happens when we move our object closer to the light?
3Activity: Shadow Size Experiment (6 min)
exploration

Let's play with shadows and see how they change!

📝 Instructions:
  1. Find a dark room or space with a white wall
  2. Turn on your flashlight
  3. Hold a toy close to the wall - look at its big shadow!
  4. Slowly move the toy away from the wall
  5. Watch how the shadow gets smaller
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child move the object, describe what's happening

Challenge: Let child predict shadow size before moving object

4Closing (3 min)

Wow! We learned how shadows change when we move objects. God created light to do amazing things!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What made our shadow big?
  • What made our shadow small?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll make a fun shadow puppet show!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Young children are naturally curious about shadows. This lesson builds spatial reasoning skills.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use encouraging language
  • Let child experiment and discover
  • Focus on exploration, not perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if shadows don't behave exactly as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's excitement about changing shadow sizes

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library shadow tracing worksheets
  • Create a shadow journal to draw different shadow sizes

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
