📋 South Carolina Homeschool Requirements

South Carolina is very homeschool-friendly with multiple options for families. The state offers three different pathways for homeschooling, giving parents flexibility to choose what works best for their family.

📝 Notification

No notification required for most homeschool options. If choosing Option 1 (homeschool statute), you may operate independently without state oversight.

📅 Attendance

180 days of instruction per year for children ages 5-17. Children must be enrolled by age 5 if they turn 5 before September 1st.

📚 Subjects

Reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, and in grades 7-12, composition and literature. Physical education or health is also required.

✅ Assessment

Annual testing or evaluation required. Options include standardized tests, portfolio review by certified teacher, or evaluation by approved testing service.

📁 Records

Maintain attendance records, subjects taught, portfolio of work samples, and documentation of annual assessment. Records must be preserved for each year until the child reaches 18.

💡 Additional Notes

Three homeschool options: Option 1 (homeschool statute - most independent), Option 2 (accountability association), or Option 3 (church-sponsored). Most families choose Option 1 for maximum flexibility.
