Empowering New York families to provide excellent, Christ-centered education at home

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

- Proverbs 22:6 (WEB) (WEB)

📋 New York Homeschool Requirements

New York has moderate homeschool regulations that require notification and record-keeping but allow families significant educational freedom. The state recognizes homeschooling as a valid educational option and provides clear guidelines for compliance.

📝 Notification

Parents must file an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) with their local school district superintendent between July 1st and August 15th each year, or within 14 days of beginning homeschooling mid-year.

📅 Attendance

Students must receive instruction for at least 180 days per year. Daily hours vary by grade: grades 1-6 require 900 hours annually, grades 7-12 require 990 hours annually.

📚 Subjects

Required subjects include: arithmetic/mathematics, reading, spelling, writing, English language arts, geography, U.S. history, science, health, art, music, physical education, and career awareness. Additional subjects required for grades 7-8 include world history and foreign language study.

✅ Assessment

Annual assessment required starting in grade 1 through a standardized test, evaluation by a certified teacher, or other approved assessment method. Results must be submitted to the school district by June 30th.

📁 Records

Parents must maintain attendance records, a list of syllabi, curricula, textbooks used, and annual assessment results. Quarterly progress reports are also required.

💡 Additional Notes

Students may participate in public school activities and dual enrollment opportunities. Some districts may request additional documentation, so it's important to understand your local district's specific requirements.
