Learning Objectives

1

Understand the concept of testing predictions

2

Observe and record results of sink or float experiments

3

Develop curiosity about how objects interact with water

Proverbs 15:22

Without counsel, plans go wrong; but with many advisers, they are established.

Proverbs 15:22 (WEB)

Just as we test our predictions about objects in water, we learn to test and verify our ideas through careful observation and guidance

📦 Materials Needed

  • Water table or large clear container
  • Towels
  • Prediction chart from previous lesson
  • Variety of small objects (plastic toys, coins, cork, rocks, feather, etc.)
  • Pencil or crayon

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Today's BibleMouse science adventure continues our sink or float exploration! Let's check our predictions from yesterday and see what really happens when we put things in water.

💭 Review Question: What did you think would sink or float yesterday?
2Teaching (5 min)

We're going to carefully test each object and see if our guesses were right. Remember, in science, it's okay if our first guess isn't correct - that's how we learn!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Some things float on top of water
  • Some things sink to the bottom
  • We can learn by watching carefully
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen to this object?
  • Why do you think it might float or sink?
3Activity: Sink or Float Test (6 min)
hands-on

Systematically test each object, comparing predictions to actual results

📝 Instructions:
  1. Take an object from your prediction chart
  2. Gently place it in the water
  3. Observe whether it sinks or floats
  4. Mark the result on your chart
  5. Say 'Wow!' or 'Oh!' to make it fun
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child place objects in water and observe

Challenge: Ask child to explain why they think each object floats or sinks

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review what we discovered today! Some of our predictions were right, and some were surprising!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was your favorite object we tested?
  • Did anything surprise you today?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll explore why some things float and some sink!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

This lesson builds scientific observation skills through hands-on learning

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let child lead the exploration
  • Encourage curiosity and observation
  • Don't worry about perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children may get excited and splash water or become impatient

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Engagement, curiosity, ability to follow simple instructions

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for sink/float coloring pages
  • Sing a BibleMouse science exploration song
  • Read a related book from BibleMouse Read-Aloud Library
