Learning Objectives

1

Understand the basic concepts of sinking and floating

2

Observe and describe objects that sink or float

3

Develop curiosity about how different objects interact with water

Genesis 1:10

God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:10 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's intentional creation of water and land, highlighting the unique properties of different materials

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear plastic tub or water table
  • Towels
  • Assorted objects: cork, rock, plastic toy, metal spoon, wooden block
  • BibleMouse Science Exploration Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Today, BibleMouse explorers will discover how some things float on water while others sink!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about solids and liquids in our last lesson?
2Teaching (5 min)

Let's learn about sink and float! Some objects stay on top of water, and some go down to the bottom.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Floating means staying on top of the water
  • Sinking means going down to the bottom of the water
  • God created different materials with special properties
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you guess what might float?
  • What do you think will sink?
3Activity: Sink or Float Adventure (6 min)
exploration

Gently drop different objects into water and observe what happens

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place water tub on a towel
  2. Take each object and predict what might happen
  3. Carefully drop object into water
  4. Watch and say 'sink' or 'float'
  5. Record observations in BibleMouse Science Journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps child drop objects and observe

Challenge: Child makes predictions before testing each object

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about objects in water

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did some objects do in the water?
  • Did anything surprise you?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll make predictions about more objects before testing them!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Sinking and floating introduce basic physics concepts in a playful way

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
  • Let child explore and make mistakes
  • Focus on observation, not perfect answers
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if predictions are incorrect

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Excitement about discovery, careful observation

Extension Activities

  • Draw pictures of objects that sank or floated
  • Sing a BibleMouse song about water and God's creation

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
