Learning Objectives

1

Count objects in two separate groups

2

Combine groups and find total number

3

Develop joy in discovering mathematical relationships

Matthew 14:17

They told him, 'We only have here five loaves and two fish.'

Matthew 14:17 (WEB)

Demonstrates combining small groups to create a larger total

📦 Materials Needed

  • Counting bears
  • Small toy animals
  • Number cards 1-5
  • BibleMouse addition mat

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Review yesterday's lesson about Jesus adding fish and loaves

💭 Review Question: How many fish did Jesus use to feed everyone?
2Teaching (5 min)

Introduce adding groups together

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • When we put groups together, we can count how many are in ALL groups
  • Let's use our BibleMouse counting bears to show adding
  • God loves when we learn and explore His wonderful world
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you show me two different groups of bears?
  • How many bears are in each group?
3Activity: Bear Addition Adventure (6 min)
game

Students combine different colored bear groups and count total

📝 Instructions:
  1. Put red bears in one group
  2. Put blue bears in another group
  3. Count how many bears are in EACH group
  4. Combine groups and count TOTAL bears
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer bears, limit to 3-4 total

Challenge: Use number cards to record addition equation

4Closing (3 min)

Celebrate mathematical discovery

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about adding today?
  • How many total bears did we have?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about taking things away - subtraction!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

PK4 students are learning foundational addition concepts through play

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use enthusiastic, encouraging language
  • Let child explore and make mistakes
  • Focus on fun, not perfect performance
🤔 Common Struggles:

Keeping track of total when combining groups

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to count both original groups and combined total

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional addition worksheets
  • Sing addition songs from BibleMouse Song Collection
