Learning Objectives

1

Identify four basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle

2

Sort and describe shapes by their characteristics

3

Develop joy in learning and exploring mathematical concepts

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 9:10 (WEB)

Just as shapes have specific characteristics, wisdom comes from understanding God's design

📦 Materials Needed

  • Shape blocks
  • Large sorting mat or blanket
  • Craft sticks
  • BibleMouse shape template sheets

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse Shape Review Party! Let's remember the shapes we've learned this week.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me a triangle from your shape blocks?
2Teaching (5 min)

Today we'll play a fun sorting game to review our shapes. Each shape has special features we can describe.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Triangles have 3 sides and 3 corners
  • Rectangles have 4 sides with opposite sides the same length
  • Squares are special rectangles where all sides are equal
  • Circles have no corners and are round
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a triangle different from a rectangle?
  • Can you count the sides of each shape?
3Activity: Shape Sorting Party (6 min)
game

Children will sort shapes into different groups on a large mat

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread out all shape blocks
  2. Create separate piles for each shape type
  3. Count sides and describe each shape
  4. Cheer when all shapes are sorted correctly!
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps sort and guide

Challenge: Time the sorting activity or add more complex shape descriptions

4Closing (3 min)

Great job sorting shapes today! Let's review what we learned.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What shapes did we sort today?
  • How many sides does a triangle have?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll start learning about comparing groups of objects

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Shape recognition is crucial for early mathematical understanding

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle encouragement
  • Make learning playful
  • Praise effort over perfection
🤔 Common Struggles:

Distinguishing between similar shapes like squares and rectangles

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child confidently identifying and describing shape characteristics

Extension Activities

  • Create shape collage using BibleMouse Printables Library templates
  • Play 'I Spy' with shapes around the house
