Learning Objectives

1

Understand that shadows change size when light source moves

2

Experiment with making shadows larger and smaller

3

Develop curiosity about how light works

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as we can change the size of shadows by moving light, Jesus brings light that changes everything in our lives

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • White wall or large white paper
  • Small toy or object
  • Dark room or space

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Recap yesterday's shadow puppet lesson. Ask child to show a shadow puppet they learned.

💭 Review Question: Can you make a shadow bunny like we did yesterday?
2Teaching (5 min)

In today's BibleMouse science lesson, we'll explore how shadows change!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light makes shadows
  • Moving light closer makes big shadows
  • Moving light farther makes small shadows
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen if we move the light?
  • Can you guess if the shadow will get bigger or smaller?
3Activity: Shadow Size Experiment (6 min)
experimentation

Explore how shadows change size by moving the light

📝 Instructions:
  1. Turn off lights to make room dark
  2. Hold flashlight close to toy - watch big shadow
  3. Move flashlight far from toy - watch small shadow
  4. Let child experiment moving light
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent moves light, child watches

Challenge: Child measures shadow length with string

4Closing (3 min)

Review shadow size changes

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened when we moved the light?
  • Did the shadow get bigger or smaller?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how God made light on the first day of creation!

Teaching Notes

PK3 children are learning cause and effect through play

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use lots of excited, encouraging language
  • Let child experiment freely
  • Focus on exploration, not perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

May get distracted or lose interest quickly

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's excitement about changing shadow sizes

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library shadow tracing worksheet
