Learning Objectives

1

Understand that some objects sink in water while others float

2

Make predictions about whether objects will sink or float

3

Develop curiosity about how different objects interact with water

Job 36:27

For he draws up the drops of water, which distill in rain from his vapor,

Job 36:27 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's amazing design of water and its properties

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear plastic bin or water table
  • Water
  • Variety of small objects (cork, rock, plastic toy, metal spoon, wooden block, etc.)
  • Towel for cleanup

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

In today's BibleMouse science adventure, we're going to explore how things behave in water!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about water yesterday when we poured it?
2Teaching (5 min)

Let's talk about how some things float on top of water, while others sink to the bottom.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Water is amazing - it can hold some things up and let others go down
  • We can guess (predict) what might happen before we try
  • God created water to do special things!
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when we put this object in water?
  • Can you point to something that might float?
3Activity: Sink or Float Exploration (6 min)
experimentation

Carefully test different objects in water, predicting and observing

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fill water bin about halfway
  2. Choose an object
  3. Ask child to predict: 'Will this sink or float?'
  4. Gently place object in water
  5. Observe together what happens
  6. Sort objects into 'sink' and 'float' groups
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer objects, focus on just 2-3 clear examples

Challenge: Try to create a boat that can float using aluminum foil

4Closing (3 min)

Let's remember how God made water special!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What objects did we see float?
  • What objects sank to the bottom?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how water can soak into things like sponges!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

PK3 children are just beginning to understand cause and effect

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use lots of excitement and praise
  • Let child lead exploration
  • Don't worry about perfect scientific method
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if predictions are wrong

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's engagement and willingness to try new things

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library water-themed coloring sheet
  • Sing a water-related song from BibleMouse Song Collection

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
