2

Use building blocks to demonstrate AB pattern sequence

3

Develop spatial reasoning and pattern recognition skills

Proverbs 3:19

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)

God creates with intentional design and patterns, just like we create patterns with blocks

📦 Materials Needed

  • Wooden building blocks
  • 2-3 different colored/shaped blocks
  • Large flat surface for building

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Recall yesterday's shape sticker pattern and introduce today's block pattern activity

💭 Review Question: Can you show me the pattern you made with stickers yesterday?
2Teaching (5 min)

Demonstrate creating a simple AB block pattern

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Look at these blocks - we can make a special pattern!
  • Watch how I put a red block, then a blue block, then another red block
  • This is called an AB pattern because it repeats two different things
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What colors of blocks do you see?
  • Can you help me make a pattern?
3Activity: Block Pattern Builders (6 min)
hands-on play

Create and extend block patterns on flat surface

📝 Instructions:
  1. Choose two different blocks
  2. Place blocks in repeating pattern
  3. Try to make the pattern as long as you can!
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps child place blocks in pattern

Challenge: Child creates independent pattern with three block types

4Closing (3 min)

Review block pattern and celebrate creation

📝 Review Questions:
  • What pattern did we make?
  • Can you show me the pattern again?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll dance our shape patterns!

Teaching Notes
