Learning Objectives

1

Understand that shadows change size based on distance from light source

2

Experiment with creating different sized shadows

3

Develop curiosity about how light works

John 8:12

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as light changes shadows, Jesus brings light to our understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • White wall or large white paper
  • Small toy or object
  • BibleMouse Science Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Recall yesterday's lesson about shadow shapes. Ask child to show how they made shadows yesterday.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about shadows yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Today, we'll discover how moving closer or farther from a light source changes shadow size.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light travels in straight lines
  • When you move closer to the light, your shadow gets bigger
  • When you move away, your shadow gets smaller
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you guess what might make a big shadow?
  • What happens if we move our object closer to the light?
3Activity: Shadow Size Experiment (10 min)
hands-on

Explore how distance changes shadow size using a flashlight and small toy

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place white paper or wall as background
  2. Turn off room lights
  3. Hold flashlight in one spot
  4. Place toy close to the light and observe shadow
  5. Slowly move toy away from light and watch shadow change
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child move toy, describe what happens

Challenge: Let child predict shadow size before moving

4Closing (3 min)

Review shadow size experiment and draw in BibleMouse Science Journal

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened to the shadow when we moved the toy?
  • Did the shadow get bigger or smaller?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how shadows move during the day!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Children are learning spatial relationships and light physics

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient and let child explore
  • Encourage observations and questions
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
🤔 Common Struggles:

May have trouble understanding abstract concept of light projection

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's excitement about changing shadow sizes

Extension Activities

  • Create shadow puppet show
  • Explore shadows outside on sunny day
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library shadow worksheets
