Learning Objectives

1

Understand that shadows form when objects block light

2

Demonstrate how to create a shadow using different objects

3

Develop curiosity about light and shadow interactions

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as objects create shadows by blocking light, Jesus teaches that He brings light into our darkness

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • White wall or large white paper
  • Various objects (toys, blocks, hands)
  • BibleMouse Science Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

In today's BibleMouse lesson, we'll explore how shadows are made when something blocks light!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about shade keeping us cool yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Shadows happen when something stops light from passing through. Light travels in straight lines, and when an object gets in its way, a shadow appears!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light comes from sources like the sun or a flashlight
  • When light hits an object, the object blocks some light
  • The blocked light creates a dark shape called a shadow
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you see your own shadow?
  • What makes shadows change?
3Activity: Shadow Maker (10 min)
hands-on

Create shadows using different objects and a flashlight

📝 Instructions:
  1. Dim the room or go to a dark space
  2. Hold a flashlight and shine it on a white wall
  3. Place different objects between the light and the wall
  4. Observe the shadows that form
  5. Draw the shadows in your BibleMouse Science Journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use larger objects that make clear shadows

Challenge: Try creating shadow puppets with hands

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about shadows and light

📝 Review Questions:
  • What do you need to make a shadow?
  • What happens to light when it hits an object?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore different shadow shapes!
