Learning Objectives

1

Identify which materials absorb water and which repel water

2

Conduct a simple scientific experiment

3

Develop curiosity about material properties

Proverbs 2:10

Wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

Proverbs 2:10 (WEB)

Just as we learn about how different materials interact with water, we can learn about God's wisdom and how it 'soaks into' our hearts

📦 Materials Needed

  • Paper towels
  • Plastic wrap
  • Fabric scraps
  • Wax paper
  • Small cup of water
  • Dropper or spoon
  • Tray or large plate

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned about different materials. Today, we'll discover how some materials love water and some push it away!

💭 Review Question: What materials did we learn about yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Some materials soak up water like a sponge, and some push water away like a raincoat!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Water can be absorbed (soaked up) or repelled (pushed away)
  • Different materials have different properties
  • We can test materials to see how they react to water
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when water touches these different materials?
  • Have you seen water soak into something before?
3Activity: Water Absorption Experiment (10 min)
hands-on

Let's test different materials to see how they react to water!

📝 Instructions:
  1. Put different materials on the tray
  2. Use dropper to place small drops of water on each material
  3. Watch and observe what happens
  4. Mark which materials absorb water and which don't
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps child place water drops

Challenge: Child predicts what will happen before testing

4Closing (3 min)

Let's talk about what we discovered!

📝 Review Questions:
  • Which material soaked up the most water?
  • Which material pushed water away?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore magnetic materials in our BibleMouse science adventure!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Young children are naturally curious about how things work. This lesson builds scientific observation skills.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let child lead the exploration
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Use positive, encouraging language
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get excited and splash water or mix materials

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to make careful observations and describe what they see

Extension Activities

  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library water absorption worksheet
  • Collect more materials to test from around the house

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
