Understand the difference between high and low pitched sounds

2

Create sounds with different pitches using simple objects

3

Develop listening skills and sound awareness

Psalm 98:4

Make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth! Break out in song, rejoice, and sing praises.

Psalm 98:4 (WEB)

Explores how God created different sounds and encourages us to use our voices and instruments to praise Him

📦 Materials Needed

  • Rubber bands
  • Empty glass bottles
  • Water
  • Wooden spoon
  • Tuning fork (if available)
  • BibleMouse Science Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned about loud and soft sounds. Today, we'll discover how sounds can be high or low.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember a loud sound you heard yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Let's explore how sounds can be high like a tiny mouse squeak or low like a big bear's growl!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • High sounds have quick, fast vibrations
  • Low sounds have slow, deep vibrations
  • Different objects make different sound pitches
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What sounds high to you?
  • What sounds low to you?
3Activity: Sound Pitch Exploration (10 min)
hands-on

Create high and low sounds with rubber bands and water-filled bottles

📝 Instructions:
  1. Stretch a rubber band and pluck it - listen to its pitch
  2. Stretch the rubber band differently and pluck again
  3. Fill glass bottles with different water levels
  4. Gently tap bottles to hear different pitches
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer bottles with more distinct water levels

Challenge: Try to play a simple melody on the water bottles

4Closing (3 min)

Let's remember how God created amazing sounds all around us!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What high sound did you make today?
  • What low sound did you make?

Coming up: Tomorrow in BibleMouse, we'll make our very own musical instruments!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Pitch is about the speed of sound vibrations - faster means higher pitch, slower means lower pitch

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Demonstrate sounds before asking child to reproduce
  • Be patient and make it fun!
  • Use the BibleMouse Resource Guide for additional visual aids
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might have difficulty distinguishing subtle pitch differences

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to create and recognize different sound pitches

Extension Activities

  • Record different sounds on a smartphone and compare pitches
  • Create a simple 'sound journal' in BibleMouse Science Journal
