Learning Objectives

1

Identify objects that are magnetic and non-magnetic

2

Understand that not all objects respond to magnets

3

Develop curiosity about scientific exploration

Proverbs 2:6

For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:6 (WEB)

Just as we discover how magnets work through careful observation, God gives us wisdom to understand the world around us

📦 Materials Needed

  • Variety of household objects (metal spoon, plastic toy, wooden block, paper clip, etc.)
  • Strong refrigerator magnet
  • Sorting tray or paper plate
  • BibleMouse Science Exploration Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Recall yesterday's lesson about what magnets are. Show the magnet and ask children to remember what they learned.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about magnets yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Explain that not everything is magnetic. We're going to be scientific explorers and discover which objects our magnet will stick to!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Magnets only stick to some special types of metal
  • We can test objects by bringing the magnet close
  • Some things will 'jump' to the magnet, others won't move
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when I bring the magnet close?
  • Can you guess which things might stick?
3Activity: Magnetic Mystery Sorting (10 min)
hands-on

Children will test various objects and sort them into 'Magnetic' and 'Not Magnetic' groups

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread out collection of objects
  2. Slowly bring magnet close to each object
  3. Watch carefully what happens
  4. Sort objects into two groups
  5. Count how many are magnetic
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps with sorting

Challenge: Child predicts before testing each object

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we discovered about magnetic and non-magnetic objects

📝 Review Questions:
  • What objects did the magnet stick to?
  • What surprised you today?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how magnets can push and pull each other!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Magnetism is an invisible force that attracts certain metals like iron

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use safe, child-friendly magnets
  • Supervise closely to prevent magnet from being put in mouth
  • Encourage careful, gentle exploration
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if objects don't behave as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's excitement about discovery, careful observation

Extension Activities

  • Create a BibleMouse Magnetic Exploration Poster
  • Sing a song about magnets from BibleMouse Song Collection
