Learning Objectives

1

Identify and describe basic material properties (flexible, absorbent, magnetic)

2

Conduct simple scientific tests on different materials

3

Develop curiosity about God's creative design in materials

Proverbs 3:19

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)

God's wisdom is reflected in how different materials are created with unique properties

📦 Materials Needed

  • Various household items (paper, cloth, metal, plastic)
  • Magnet
  • Small bowl of water
  • Towel
  • Sorting mat
  • BibleMouse Science Recording Sheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse Science Adventure! Yesterday we learned about object properties, and today we'll test how different materials behave.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember two ways we can describe objects?
2Teaching (8 min)

Today we're detectives exploring material properties! We'll test how things bend, soak up water, and react to magnets.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Some things bend easily, some don't
  • Some materials soak up water, others don't
  • Some materials stick to magnets, others don't
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think might happen when we test these materials?
  • How do you think God might have designed these different properties?
3Activity: Material Testing Station (10 min)
hands-on

Students will rotate through three testing stations to explore material properties

📝 Instructions:
  1. Station 1: Bend and flex different materials
  2. Station 2: Test which items absorb water
  3. Station 3: Use magnet to discover magnetic materials
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps guide testing and recording

Challenge: Child predicts results before testing

4Closing (3 min)

Review our material detective work and discuss what we discovered

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was your favorite material to test?
  • What surprised you about how materials behaved?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll practice sorting things we've learned about!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Kindergarteners are naturally curious and love hands-on exploration

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Keep instructions simple and clear
  • Allow child to explore and make discoveries
  • Praise curiosity and effort
🤔 Common Struggles:

Staying focused, understanding abstract scientific concepts

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Engagement, asking questions, careful observation

Extension Activities

  • Create a BibleMouse 'Material Properties' scrapbook page
  • Go on a home scavenger hunt to find more materials to test

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
