📦 Materials Needed

  • Letter tiles
  • Whiteboard
  • Dry erase markers
  • Picture cards with -at words
  • Small carpet square or sitting mat

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students on carpet. Sing alphabet song and focus on 'A' sound. Show big letter 'A' card.

💭 Review Question: What sound does the letter A make?
2Teaching (7 min)

Introduce -at word family by drawing a 'cat' on whiteboard. Slowly sound out c-a-t.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Short A says /a/ like in apple
  • We can change first letter to make new words
  • These are called word families
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you hear the /a/ sound in cat?
  • What other words sound like cat?
3Activity: -at Word Family Building (6 min)

Use letter tiles to build -at words: cat, mat, sat, hat, rat

  2. Add different beginning consonants
