Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and sing a phonics review song. Explain we're going to play a special word sorting game today!

💭 Review Question: What sounds do you remember from our digraph friends like 'sh' and 'ch'?
2Teaching (5 min)

Review digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) and blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr)

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Digraphs are two letters that make one sound
  • Blends are two or three consonants that keep their own sounds
  • We can read more words when we know these special sound patterns
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you think of a word with 'sh'?
  • What sound does 'ch' make?
  • How do blends help us read bigger words?
3Activity: Digraph and Blend Sort (7 min)
hands-on

Students will sort word cards into different digraph and blend categories

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread out sorting mats with digraph/blend headers
  2. Give each student a set of word cards
  3. Have them place words in correct categories
  4. Read words together after sorting
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer cards and focus on 3-4 digraphs

Challenge: Create sentences using sorted words

4Closing (3 min)

Celebrate learning by doing a quick word reading parade

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was your favorite digraph today?
  • Can you show me a blend you learned?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for helping us learn to read and understand your wonderful words.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll review our sight words!

Psalm 119:105
