Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Let's review what we learned about addition yesterday.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me how we add numbers using our fingers?
2Teaching (8 min)

Today we'll learn about subtraction using our special ten frames. Subtraction is like sharing or giving away some of what we have.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • A ten frame helps us see numbers clearly
  • Subtraction means taking away or removing
  • We can count what's left after removing
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens when we take some things away?
  • Can you show me how we might share toys with a friend?
3Activity: Ten Frame Take Away Game (10 min)
hands-on

  1. Fill the ten frame with 8 counters
  2. Roll a die to see how many counters to remove
  3. Count how many are left
  4. Record the subtraction problem on a whiteboard
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer counters and remove 1-2 at a time

Challenge: Create subtraction stories while removing counters

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review our subtraction adventure today!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about taking away?
  • How does a ten frame help us see numbers?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll play a fun subtraction game called 'Subtraction Roll and Remove'

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Subtraction is an abstract concept for young learners. Use concrete objects to make it real.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use encouraging language
  • Make it a game, not a chore
  • Celebrate every attempt, not just correct answers
🤔 Common Struggles:

Counting backwards and understanding 'taking away'

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to physically remove counters and count remaining objects

Extension Activities

  • Create a subtraction story using favorite toys
  • Practice subtraction with snacks (safely eating after solving!)
