Learning Objectives

1

Compare objects by weight using hands and a simple balance scale

2

Identify which objects are heavier or lighter

3

Develop curiosity about measurement and God's design in creation

Proverbs 16:11

A just balance and scales are Yahweh's; all the weights in the bag are his work.

Proverbs 16:11 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's care for precision and measurement in our world

📦 Materials Needed

  • Balance scale
  • Various household objects (toys, books, small containers)
  • BibleMouse Resource Guide for Grade K Math
  • Notebook for recording observations

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse adventure in math! Let's remember how we measured things in Noah's ark last week and explore how things can be heavy or light.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about measuring long things in our last lesson?
2Teaching (8 min)

Today we'll learn how to compare things by their weight. Just like God carefully designed everything with purpose, we can discover how objects feel different when we lift them.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Some things feel heavy when we pick them up
  • Some things feel light and easy to move
  • We can use our hands and a balance scale to compare weights
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you find something heavy in our room?
  • What might feel lighter than a book?
3Activity: Weight Detective Hunt (10 min)
hands-on

Use the balance scale to compare different objects and predict which will be heavier or lighter

📝 Instructions:
  1. Gather objects from around the room
  2. Take turns placing objects on each side of the balance scale
  3. Predict which side will go down before testing
  4. Record your observations in your BibleMouse notebook
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only 3-4 objects and help child compare

Challenge: Estimate weights before using the scale

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about weight and measurement

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about heavy and light things?
  • How can we use a balance scale?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll continue exploring how things balance and compare!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Kindergarteners are developing spatial and comparative reasoning skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use encouraging language
  • Let child explore and make predictions
  • Focus on fun discovery, not perfect answers
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if objects don't balance exactly

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to make basic weight comparisons

Extension Activities

  • Create a weight sorting game using BibleMouse Printables
  • Sing a measurement song from BibleMouse Song Collection
  • Read a storybook about measurement from BibleMouse Read-Aloud Library

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
