Learning Objectives

1

Understand that God looks at the heart, not just appearance

2

Learn how God chose David, the youngest son

3

Recognize that God's choices are different from human choices

1 Samuel 16:6-10

When they had come, he looked at Eliab and thought, 'Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him.' But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Yahweh sees not as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.'

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse adventure! Let's remember what we learned yesterday about Samuel looking for a new king.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember why Samuel was looking for a special boy?
2Teaching (7 min)

Today, we're learning how God sees people differently than we do. Jesse had seven sons, and Samuel thought the biggest, strongest sons would be perfect. But God had a special plan!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • God looks at people's hearts, not just how they look
  • The oldest brothers weren't God's choice
  • God had a special plan for the youngest son
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think makes someone special to God?
  • Can you be important even if you're small?
3Activity: Heart Detective (8 min)
storytelling

Children will find heart cutouts and learn about God's special way of choosing people

📝 Instructions:
  1. Hide heart cutouts around the room
  2. Let children search for hearts
  3. When a heart is found, discuss how God looks at hearts
  4. Draw something that shows a kind heart on each found heart
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help younger children find hearts

Challenge: Have older children explain how they can have a good heart

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about God's special choosing

📝 Review Questions:
  • Who did God choose today?
  • How does God look at people?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, help us have hearts that love You, just like David did.

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll learn more about David taking care of sheep!

1 Samuel 16:7

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7 (WEB)
