Learning Objectives

1

Understand that mass remains constant during chemical reactions in closed systems

2

Conduct a controlled chemical reaction and measure mass before and after

3

Recognize God's precise design in physical laws

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.

Colossians 1:17 (WEB)

Just as God maintains the consistency of matter's mass, He sustains the entire universe

📦 Materials Needed

  • Digital kitchen scale
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Sealed clear plastic bags
  • Science notebook
  • Pencil
  • Safety goggles

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

BibleMouse Science Adventure: Explore how God's design keeps matter consistent

💭 Review Question: What did we learn yesterday about physical changes?
2Teaching (10 min)

Introducing chemical reactions and mass conservation

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Chemical reactions change substance properties
  • Total mass remains constant in closed systems
  • God designed physical laws with incredible precision
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How might chemical reactions differ from physical changes?
  • Why is measuring mass important in scientific experiments?
3Activity: Baking Soda and Vinegar Mass Conservation Experiment (20 min)
hands-on

Measure mass before and after chemical reaction in sealed bag

📝 Instructions:
  1. Put on safety goggles
  2. Weigh sealed bag empty and record initial mass
  3. Add measured baking soda to one side of bag
  4. Add measured vinegar to other side
  5. Seal bag completely
  6. Gently mix chemicals inside sealed bag
  7. Weigh bag after reaction
  8. Compare and record masses
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent assists with measurements

Challenge: Calculate percentage of mass change

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss experiment results and Biblical connections

📝 Review Questions:
  • Did the total mass change?
  • What did you observe during the reaction?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll investigate why some reactions seem to lose mass

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Chemical reactions transform substances without creating or destroying matter

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Emphasize careful measurement
  • Encourage scientific curiosity
  • Connect scientific observations to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Understanding that mass is conserved even when substances change

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Accurate measurements, careful observation, thoughtful questions

Extension Activities

  • Research other chemical reactions that demonstrate mass conservation
  • Create a poster explaining the experiment for BibleMouse Science Fair
  • Watch supplemental video in BibleMouse Resource Guide about atomic structure
