Learning Objectives

1

Understand density as a relationship between mass and volume

2

Create a liquid density column with multiple layers

3

Practice scientific prediction and observation skills

Proverbs 2:7

He stores up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.

Proverbs 2:7 (WEB)

Just as different liquids have unique properties that determine their position in a density column, God provides wisdom that helps us understand and navigate life's complexities

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear glass or plastic tall container
  • Honey
  • Dish soap
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Food coloring
  • Small objects like grape, cork, marble, paperclip

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Review previous day's density calculations and introduce today's density tower challenge

💭 Review Question: What determines whether an object sinks or floats?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain liquid density and demonstrate how liquids with different densities can create distinct layers

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Density is mass per unit volume
  • Liquids can layer based on their density
  • Denser liquids sink, less dense liquids rise
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What might affect a liquid's density?
  • How could we predict where an object will settle?
3Activity: Density Tower Construction (20 min)
hands-on

Create a multi-layered liquid density column and test object placement

📝 Instructions:
  1. Carefully pour honey into bottom of clear container
  2. Slowly add dish soap using back of spoon
  3. Add water with different food coloring
  4. Pour vegetable oil
  5. Top with rubbing alcohol
  6. Drop in small objects and observe where they settle
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer liquid layers

Challenge: Predict exact settlement location of each object before dropping

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss observations and record findings in science notebook

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened to each object?
  • Why did objects settle where they did?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll investigate how to identify unknown materials using density and other properties

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Density is a complex concept requiring patience and hands-on exploration

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Pour liquids slowly to maintain distinct layers
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let child lead the experiment with guidance
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if layers mix or objects don't behave as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Understanding that objects settle based on relative density

Extension Activities

  • Research real-world applications of density
  • Create a density tower with more exotic liquids
  • Design a poster explaining the experiment
