Learning Objectives

1

Understand how the diaphragm creates pressure changes in lungs

2

Construct a working model demonstrating inhalation and exhalation

3

Appreciate God's intricate design of the human respiratory system

Genesis 2:7

Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7 (WEB)

Demonstrates how breath is fundamental to life, just as God's breath gives spiritual and physical life

📦 Materials Needed

  • 2 clear plastic bottles
  • 2 balloons
  • Rubber bands
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Science notebook
  • BibleMouse Resource Guide: Grade 5 Science

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

In today's BibleMouse lesson, we'll explore how God designed our lungs to work like miraculous breathing machines!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about alveoli in yesterday's lesson?
2Teaching (12 min)

Explain the mechanics of breathing and pressure changes

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • The diaphragm is a muscle that moves up and down
  • When diaphragm moves down, chest cavity expands
  • This creates lower pressure, causing air to rush in
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How is breathing a miracle of God's design?
  • What makes our lungs so special?
3Activity: DIY Lung Model (18 min)
hands-on

Create a working lung model to demonstrate breathing mechanics

📝 Instructions:
  1. Cut bottom off one plastic bottle
  2. Stretch balloon over bottle bottom
  3. Attach second balloon inside bottle as 'lung'
  4. Pull bottom balloon to demonstrate inhalation
  5. Push balloon in to show exhalation
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps with cutting and assembly

Challenge: Calculate and graph pressure changes

4Closing (5 min)

Reflect on how wonderfully God designed our respiratory system

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about how lungs work?
  • How does our breathing show God's amazing design?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll measure lung capacity and explore how breathing connects to our circulatory system

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Respiratory system involves complex pressure mechanics

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
  • Allow child to explore and experiment
  • Connect scientific learning to biblical wonder
🤔 Common Struggles:

Understanding abstract concept of pressure changes

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to explain basic lung mechanics

Extension Activities

  • Research famous scientists who studied respiratory system
  • Create detailed respiratory system diagram in science notebook
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional worksheets
