Learning Objectives

1

Understand how to measure and record pulse rates

2

Identify different pulse locations in the human body

3

Recognize how physical activity impacts heart rate

Psalm 139:14

I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Psalm 139:14 (WEB)

Highlights the intricate design of the human body and its amazing circulatory system

📦 Materials Needed

  • Stethoscope (or optional DIY paper tube)
  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Science notebook
  • Pencil
  • BibleMouse Science Recording Sheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Begin by asking students to place their hand on their heart and feel its rhythm. Discuss how God designed our bodies with incredible complexity.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about blood's journey through the body yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain pulse measurement techniques and heart rate variations

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Locate pulse points: wrist, neck, inside of elbow
  • Demonstrate proper pulse measurement technique
  • Discuss how heart rate changes with activity
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think our heart rate changes?
  • How might exercise affect our heartbeat?
3Activity: Heartbeat Tracking Investigation (20 min)
hands-on

Students will measure and record pulse rates at rest, after walking, and after running in place

📝 Instructions:
  1. Measure resting pulse rate for 15 seconds and multiply by 4
  2. Walk in place for 1 minute
  3. Immediately measure and record pulse rate
  4. Run in place for 1 minute
  5. Immediately measure and record pulse rate
  6. Complete BibleMouse Science Recording Sheet
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use shorter activity durations

Challenge: Create a graph showing pulse rate changes

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss findings and marvel at God's design of the human body

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you notice about your heart rate?
  • How does physical activity impact your pulse?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll create a model of the circulatory system to visualize blood flow

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

The circulatory system is a complex network that delivers oxygen and nutrients throughout the body

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use a gentle, encouraging approach
  • Allow children to explore and discover
  • Emphasize the wonder of God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find precise pulse counting challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Accurate pulse measurement and understanding of heart rate changes

Extension Activities

  • Research famous heart doctors or medical missionaries
  • Create a detailed drawing of the heart in science notebook
  • Learn about how missionaries use medical knowledge to serve others
