Learning Objectives

1

Identify independent, dependent, and controlled variables in scientific investigations

2

Design a simple experiment demonstrating understanding of variables

3

Recognize how systematic thinking reflects God's orderly creation

1 Corinthians 14:40

Let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Corinthians 14:40 (WEB)

Scientific investigations require careful, systematic approaches that reflect God's love of order and precision

📦 Materials Needed

  • Science notebook
  • Pencils
  • 3 identical clear plastic cups
  • Water
  • Measuring cup
  • Liquid food coloring
  • Spoon
  • Ruler

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science exploration! We'll learn how scientists carefully control experiments to discover truth.

💭 Review Question: What steps of the scientific method do you remember from yesterday's lesson?
2Teaching (12 min)

Understanding Variables: How Scientists Ask Questions

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Independent variable: The factor you change
  • Dependent variable: What you measure
  • Controlled variables: Factors you keep the same
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Why is it important to change only one thing at a time in an experiment?
  • How might changing multiple variables make results confusing?
3Activity: Color Diffusion Variable Experiment (18 min)
hands-on

Investigate how water temperature affects food coloring spread

📝 Instructions:
  1. Label 3 cups: Cold, Room Temp, Warm
  2. Fill each cup with same amount of water
  3. Adjust water temperature in each cup
  4. Add one drop of food coloring to center of each
  5. Observe and record spread of color over 5 minutes
  6. Measure and record color spread diameter
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only cold and warm water

Challenge: Add more variables like salt or sugar concentration

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss experiment results and identify variables observed

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was our independent variable?
  • What did we measure as our dependent variable?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about designing fair scientific tests

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Fifth graders are developing abstract thinking about experimental design

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Help child record precise measurements
  • Ask open-ended questions about results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Distinguishing between different types of variables

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Systematic recording and logical reasoning about experimental results

Extension Activities

  • Research famous scientific experiments with clear variable controls
  • Create a poster explaining experiment variables

Ready for Tomorrow?
