Learning Objectives

1

Learn effective annotation techniques for independent reading

2

Practice asking meaningful questions while reading

3

Develop note-taking skills for literature comprehension

Proverbs 2:2-3

So that you turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding;

Proverbs 2:2-3 (WEB)

Just as we seek understanding in God's word, active reading helps us understand literature more deeply

📦 Materials Needed

  • Novel chosen for book club
  • Notebook or reading journal
  • Colored pencils or highlighters
  • Sticky notes

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that reading is like a conversation with the author. Just as we listen carefully when talking to friends, we want to 'listen' carefully to books.

💭 Review Question: What does it mean to be an active reader?
2Teaching (15 min)

Demonstrate active reading strategies using an example text

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Annotation means making marks and notes in the margins
  • Ask questions while reading to stay engaged
  • Look for patterns, connections, and interesting details
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a good reading question?
  • How can questions help us understand a story better?
  • How might asking questions be similar to how we study the Bible?
3Activity: Active Reading Practice (10 min)
hands-on

Students practice annotation techniques in their book club novels

📝 Instructions:
  1. Choose 2-3 pages from your novel
  2. Use different colored pencils to mark:
  3. - Questions with a question mark symbol
  4. - Interesting character moments with a star
  5. - Connections to other stories or life with a heart
  6. Write at least 3 margin notes
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Mark only 1 page with 2 different symbols

Challenge: Create a detailed reading response journal entry

4Closing (5 min)

Share a few examples of active reading annotations

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about reading today?
  • How can asking questions make reading more interesting?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, help us to be curious readers who seek understanding in stories and in Your word.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll have our first book club meeting and use these new reading skills!
