Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Review previous day's prefix lesson. Introduce today's focus on suffix spelling rules.

💭 Review Question: What do you remember about how prefixes change word meanings?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explore three key suffix spelling rules: dropping e, doubling consonants, changing y to i

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • When adding a suffix starting with a vowel, drop the final e (hope + ing = hoping)
  • For one-syllable words ending in a consonant-vowel-consonant, double the final consonant (stop + ing = stopping)
  • When adding a suffix to a word ending in y, change y to i (happy + ness = happiness)
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think these spelling rules exist?
  • Can you think of examples of words that follow these rules?
3Activity: Suffix Strategy Notebook (10 min)

4Closing (5 min)

Review notebook pages and share interesting discoveries

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was the most surprising thing you learned about suffixes?
  • How might understanding these rules help you spell better?
