Learning Objectives

1

Understand the role of light in photosynthesis

2

Conduct a scientific experiment to test light's importance

3

Appreciate God's intricate design in plant processes

Genesis 1:11

God said, 'Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after its kind, with its seed in it, on the earth;' and it was so.

Genesis 1:11 (WEB)

Highlights God's intentional design in creating plant life and their ability to grow and produce

📦 Materials Needed

  • Potted plant with large leaves
  • Aluminum foil
  • Iodine solution
  • Plastic gloves
  • Scissors
  • White paper

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

In today's BibleMouse science adventure, we'll explore how plants make their own food through a fascinating light experiment!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about photosynthesis in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain photosynthesis as God's incredible food-making process for plants

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Plants need light to create their own food
  • Leaves act like solar panels, capturing sunlight
  • Photosynthesis transforms light into plant energy
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think God designed plants to make their own food?
  • How is photosynthesis similar to how we receive energy?
3Activity: Light Blocking Experiment (20 min)
hands-on experiment

Test whether light is necessary for photosynthesis by partially covering a leaf

📝 Instructions:
  1. Select a healthy potted plant with large leaves
  2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil to cover half a leaf
  3. Carefully wrap foil around leaf, leaving half exposed
  4. Wait 24-48 hours
  5. Remove foil and test covered area with iodine solution
  6. Observe color changes indicating starch production
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use a smaller leaf or shorter observation time

Challenge: Create multiple test leaves with different light exposures

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss experiment results and marvel at plant design

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened to the covered part of the leaf?
  • Why is light so important for plants?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how plants breathe through their leaves!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Photosynthesis is complex, so focus on basic principles

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Wear gloves when handling iodine
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let child lead the experiment with guidance
🤔 Common Struggles:

Understanding that not all parts of the leaf look the same after light exposure

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity about plant processes and careful experimental technique

Extension Activities

  • Draw a detailed diagram of the experiment in BibleMouse Science Journal
  • Research other plants that might react differently to light
  • Create a poster explaining photosynthesis for family display

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
