Learning Objectives

1

Understand how plant stems transport water and nutrients

2

Conduct a scientific experiment to observe water transport

3

Appreciate God's intricate design in plant systems

Isaiah 41:19

I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive tree. I will set in the desert the cypress tree and the pine and the box tree together.

Isaiah 41:19 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's intentional design of plant life and their unique structures

📦 Materials Needed

  • 3-4 celery stalks with leaves
  • Clear glasses or jars
  • Food coloring (red, blue, green)
  • Water
  • Knife (for parent use)
  • Notebook for observations
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we explored roots, and today we'll discover how stems are like amazing water highways for plants.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about roots yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Stems are incredible plant structures that work like pipelines, moving water and nutrients from roots to leaves. Just as God designed intricate transportation systems in nature, stems carefully distribute life-giving resources throughout the plant.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Stems are plant highways for water and nutrients
  • Different plants have different stem structures
  • Stems provide support and transportation
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How do you think water travels from the ground to the leaves?
  • Why do plants need strong stems?
3Activity: Celery Dye Transport Experiment (20 min)
hands-on experiment

We'll watch how water moves through plant stems using food coloring

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fill 3 clear glasses with water
  2. Add different food coloring to each glass
  3. Cut celery stalks at an angle
  4. Place one celery stalk in each colored water glass
  5. Wait and observe over 24 hours
  6. Record observations in science notebook
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer colors or fewer celery stalks

Challenge: Compare different types of plant stems or track precise color movement times

4Closing (5 min)

Reflect on how wonderfully God designed plant transportation systems

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about stem functions?
  • How do stems help plants survive?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore leaves and how they make food for plants!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Stems are complex plant organs with multiple functions beyond water transport

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful, patient observation
  • Let child lead scientific curiosity
  • Connect scientific learning to God's creative design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for color changes

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Excitement about scientific discovery and understanding plant systems

Extension Activities

  • Research different types of plant stems
  • Create a plant stem poster highlighting transportation functions
  • Read additional BibleMouse science library books about plant life
