Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Review Socratic seminar guidelines. Remind students about respectful listening and building on others' ideas.

2Teaching (10 min)

Explain inner circle and outer circle roles. Inner circle will discuss the text while outer circle observes and takes notes.

  1. Inner circle sits in a circle facing each other
  2. Outer circle sits around the inner circle with observation sheets
  3. Begin discussion using prepared questions
  4. Moderator guides discussion and ensures all voices are heard
  5. Take turns speaking and building on ideas

Simpler: Provide sentence starters for discussion

Challenge: Students must cite specific text evidence for each comment

4Closing (5 min)

Briefly reflect on discussion experience
