Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that today we'll learn about how Native American lands were changed by European settlers, and how breaking promises hurts people.

💭 Review Question: What does a promise mean to you?
2Teaching (10 min)

Discuss how Native American tribes had lived on their lands for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Explain how treaties were agreements meant to protect Native American lands, but were often broken.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Native Americans had complex societies with their own cultures
  • Land was sacred and important to Native American communities
  • Many treaties were not honored by European settlers
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How might you feel if someone took your home without permission?
  • Why is keeping a promise important?
  • How can we show respect to people who are different from us?
3Activity: Treaty of Respect (10 min)
hands-on

Students will create their own 'treaty' showing how they would treat others fairly if they were in a position of power.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide paper into two columns
  2. On one side, list ways to show respect
  3. On other side, list actions that would break trust
  4. Decorate and sign the treaty
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use pre-printed worksheet with prompts

Challenge: Research actual historical treaties and compare

4Closing (5 min)

Reflect on how we can be kind and fair to everyone, remembering God's command to love our neighbors.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about Native American lands?
  • Why are promises important?
  • How can we show respect to others?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, help us to be fair, kind, and respectful to all people, just as You love each of us.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how different cultures see the world differently

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
