Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Display a large world map and ask students what they know about Britain and France in the 1790s. Explain that these two powerful countries were constantly at war, and the young United States was caught in the middle.

Discuss how Britain and France were interfering with American merchant ships, stopping and searching them, and sometimes forcing American sailors to serve in their navies. This caused great tension for the new nation.
