Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse art adventure! Yesterday we learned about atmospheric perspective, and today we'll dive deeper into creating depth in our landscapes.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember how distant objects look different from close objects?
2Teaching (15 min)

Today we'll learn how artists create the illusion of depth using three key areas: foreground, middle ground, and background.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Foreground is the closest part of the painting - largest, most detailed, and brightest colors
  • Middle ground is in between - medium size and slightly less detailed
  • Background appears smallest, lightest, and least detailed
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How might these painting principles remind us of God's intricate design?
  • What landscapes in nature show these depth principles?
3Activity: Three-Layer Landscape Painting (18 min)
hands-on

Create a landscape showing depth using size and color changes

📝 Instructions:
  1. Lightly sketch landscape with horizon line
  2. Paint background (sky) first - light blue, soft colors
  3. Add middle ground elements - trees, distant hills
  4. Paint foreground with largest, most detailed elements
  5. Add final details to bring painting to life
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer landscape elements, focus on basic depth principles

Challenge: Add more complex landscape features like mountains or water

4Closing (7 min)

Clean up art supplies and reflect on our landscape painting

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about creating depth in art?
  • How does understanding perspective help us appreciate God's creation?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll study American landscape painters who celebrated God's beautiful scenery
