Learning Objectives

1

Identify and describe at least 3 properties of rocks

2

Use scientific observation skills to examine rock samples

3

Appreciate God's creativity in rock formation

Job 28:5-6

As for the earth, out of it comes bread; underneath it is turned up as it were fire. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.

Job 28:5-6 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's incredible design in rock formation and the hidden treasures within the earth

📦 Materials Needed

  • Rock collection
  • Hand lens
  • White paper
  • Hardness testing tools (nail, penny, glass)
  • Vinegar
  • Notebook
  • Pencil
  • BibleMouse Rock Observation Worksheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Last week, we discovered how fossils tell stories about Earth's past. Today, we'll become rock detectives and learn how to describe the amazing rocks God created!

💭 Review Question: What did you learn about fossils in our last lesson?
2Teaching (12 min)

Rocks have special properties we can observe. Just like God made each of us unique, He created rocks with different characteristics!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Color: Rocks can be red, gray, brown, white, or many other colors
  • Texture: Some rocks are smooth, others are rough or bumpy
  • Hardness: Some rocks scratch easily, others are very tough
  • Layers: Some rocks have visible layers, others do not
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What different colors of rocks have you seen?
  • Why do you think rocks look so different?
3Activity: Rock Detective Investigation (14 min)
hands-on observation

Students will carefully examine rock samples, recording their observations

📝 Instructions:
  1. Use your hand lens to look closely at each rock
  2. Note the color on your BibleMouse observation sheet
  3. Test the hardness by trying to scratch with different tools
  4. Look for layers or crystals
  5. Record your findings carefully
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Focus on color and basic texture

Challenge: Create a detailed rock classification chart

4Closing (4 min)

Share your rock discoveries! What surprised you about the rocks you observed?

📝 Review Questions:
  • What are three properties of rocks?
  • How are rocks different from each other?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll explore how fire creates igneous rocks!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

This lesson introduces scientific observation skills using rocks as a learning tool

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful, gentle handling of rock samples
  • Ask open-ended questions to promote curiosity
  • Let children explore and make their own discoveries
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if they can't immediately identify rock properties

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Careful observation, curiosity, and careful recording of findings

Extension Activities

  • Create a rock collection display
  • Research one interesting rock type from the BibleMouse Resource Guide
  • Draw detailed illustrations of rock samples in science journal

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
