Learning Objectives

1

Understand how to measure and record plant seed growth

2

Create detailed scientific observations in a journal

3

Recognize God's amazing design in plant development

Genesis 1:11

God said, 'Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in them, on the earth;' and it was so.

Genesis 1:11 (WEB)

This verse highlights God's intentional design in plant reproduction and growth, perfectly aligning with our observation of seed development

📦 Materials Needed

  • Bean or radish seeds
  • Clear plastic cups
  • Potting soil
  • Water
  • Science journals
  • Rulers
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Pencils

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

BibleMouse scientists, today we'll begin our amazing journey of watching seeds grow! Remember how we learned about plant life cycles yesterday? Now we get to be real scientists and watch it happen!

💭 Review Question: What are the four stages of a plant's life cycle we learned about?
2Teaching (10 min)

Scientific observation is like being a detective for God's amazing creation. We'll carefully measure and draw our seeds, tracking their growth just like scientists do!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • How to use a ruler correctly
  • What to look for when observing seeds
  • How to make careful drawings in our science journal
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Why do you think God made plants grow in such a special way?
  • What parts of a seed do you remember from our previous lesson?
3Activity: Seed Growth Tracking (15 min)
observation

Students will create their first observation entry in their BibleMouse science journal, measuring and drawing their planted seeds

📝 Instructions:
  1. Carefully measure seed's current size
  2. Draw a detailed picture of the seed in your journal
  3. Record the date and initial observations
  4. Place cup in recommended light area
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps with measuring and drawing

Challenge: Add additional observations about soil moisture and seed condition

4Closing (5 min)

Review our observations and praise God for His incredible design in nature

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about seed observation today?
  • How can we care for our seeds this week?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore the inside of flowers and how they make new seeds!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Seeds require consistent moisture and warmth to germinate. Place in indirect sunlight.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage precise measurements
  • Make observation time fun and not stressful
  • Allow child to lead the scientific process
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for seeds to sprout

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Careful measurement, curiosity about growth process

Extension Activities

  • Create a growth prediction chart
  • Take daily photos of seed progress
  • Compare growth rates of different seed types

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
