Learning Objectives

1

Understand that not all materials are magnetic

2

Identify which materials are attracted to magnets

3

Develop scientific observation skills

Proverbs 2:4-5

If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 2:4-5 (WEB)

Just as we carefully search and test materials to understand magnetism, we can seek understanding of God's wisdom with the same careful observation

📦 Materials Needed

  • bar magnets
  • horseshoe magnets
  • various household objects (wooden spoon, paper clip, plastic toy, aluminum foil, nail, rubber band)
  • data recording sheet
  • pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Let's explore how God created materials with unique properties.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about motion in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

Magnets have a special power to attract certain materials. Not everything sticks to a magnet - only some metals, especially those containing iron.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Magnets have invisible forces that can pull some materials
  • Iron is the main metal that magnets attract
  • Different types of magnets have different strengths
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think might stick to a magnet?
  • Why do you think not everything is magnetic?
3Activity: Magnetic Material Investigation (15 min)
hands-on testing

Students will test various objects to see which are magnetic

📝 Instructions:
  1. Collect different objects from around the room
  2. Carefully bring the magnet close to each object
  3. Record whether the object is attracted to the magnet
  4. Sort objects into 'Magnetic' and 'Not Magnetic' groups
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide pre-selected objects to test

Challenge: Predict magnetic properties before testing, create a detailed chart of findings

4Closing (5 min)

Review our magnetic discoveries and clean up our workspace

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about magnetic materials?
  • Can you name three things that stick to a magnet?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore the two poles of magnets and how they interact

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Magnetism is an invisible force that demonstrates the complexity of God's creation

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Supervise magnet use to prevent pinching
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let child lead the investigation
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if objects don't behave as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity, careful testing, ability to categorize objects

Extension Activities

  • Create a magnetic vs. non-magnetic poster
  • Search home for more objects to test
  • Read BibleMouse Resource Guide page on magnetism
