Learning Objectives

1

Understand the difference between transparent, translucent, and opaque materials

2

Classify objects based on how much light passes through them

3

Develop curiosity about how light interacts with different materials

2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God's glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:6 (WEB)

Just as light reveals different properties of materials, God's light reveals truth and understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • White paper
  • Collection of household objects (glass, wax paper, cardboard, plastic wrap, etc.)
  • BibleMouse Science Observation Journal

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Review previous lesson about light traveling in straight lines. Ask: 'What happened to light when it hit different objects yesterday?'

💭 Review Question: Can you remember how light behaved when we used our flashlights with obstacles?
2Teaching (10 min)

Introduce three ways light can pass through materials: transparent (all light passes), translucent (some light passes), opaque (no light passes)

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Transparent materials let all light through - like clear glass
  • Translucent materials let some light through - like wax paper
  • Opaque materials block all light - like cardboard
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What objects in our home do you think are transparent?
  • How might different materials help or block light?
3Activity: Light Passage Investigation (15 min)
hands-on testing

Students test various household objects to classify their light-passing properties

📝 Instructions:
  1. Dim the room lights
  2. Use flashlight to shine through different objects
  3. Record observations in BibleMouse Science Observation Journal
  4. Categorize each object as transparent, translucent, or opaque
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide pre-selected objects with clear differences

Challenge: Challenge student to find objects that are hard to classify

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss findings and review light properties

📝 Review Questions:
  • What surprised you about how light passes through different materials?
  • Can you give an example of each type of material?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how light bounces off surfaces in our 'Reflection' lesson

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Understanding light properties helps develop scientific observation skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let child lead the investigation
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Praise curiosity and careful thinking
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find precise categorization challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Systematic approach to testing materials, accurate recording

Extension Activities

  • Create a light properties poster using BibleMouse Printables
  • Collect more objects to test at home
  • Draw illustrations of light passing through different materials
