Learning Objectives

1

Understand how evaporation can separate dissolved solids from water

2

Demonstrate ability to create and observe a salt solution experiment

3

Develop curiosity about how physical changes can be reversed

Proverbs 2:6

For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:6 (WEB)

Just as we can separate salt from water through careful observation, God provides wisdom to understand the world around us

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear glass or ceramic bowl
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Spoon
  • Sunny windowsill or warm location
  • Science journal
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Today's BibleMouse science adventure explores how we can get solids back from solutions through evaporation!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about dissolving things in water yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Evaporation is when water turns into a gas and disappears, leaving behind the dissolved solid

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Water can carry tiny pieces of salt or sugar
  • When water goes away, the solid remains
  • Heat helps water turn into vapor more quickly
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Where have you seen water disappear before?
  • What might happen if we leave a salt solution in the sun?
3Activity: Salt Solution Evaporation (15 min)
experiment

Create a salt solution and observe how evaporation separates the salt

📝 Instructions:
  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of salt into 1/2 cup of warm water
  2. Stir until salt completely dissolves
  3. Pour solution into clear bowl
  4. Place in sunny spot
  5. Observe and draw what happens over next few days
  6. Record observations in science journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child measure and stir ingredients

Challenge: Try different types of salt or compare evaporation rates

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss what happened to the water and salt

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you notice happening to the water?
  • Where did the salt end up?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how temperature affects how quickly things change

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Evaporation is a physical change where liquid turns to gas, leaving dissolved solids behind

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use this as opportunity to discuss God's amazing design in natural processes
  • Encourage careful observation and recording in science journal
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for water to evaporate

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity about the changing state of the solution

Extension Activities

  • Create a chart tracking evaporation time
  • Experiment with salt solutions at different temperatures
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional science recording sheets
