Learning Objectives

1

Understand the concept of solubility in different substances

2

Conduct a scientific investigation to determine what dissolves in water

3

Develop careful observation and recording skills

Proverbs 2:10-11

For wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

Proverbs 2:10-11 (WEB)

Just as we explore how substances interact in science, we can explore how God's wisdom interacts with our understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear glass or plastic containers
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Sand
  • Flour
  • Vegetable oil
  • Stirring spoon
  • Science journal
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday, we learned about solutions, and today we'll investigate what really dissolves in water.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what a solution is from our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

In today's BibleMouse lesson, we'll explore solubility - how some substances mix completely with water while others do not.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Some substances disappear completely in water
  • Other substances just sit at the bottom or float
  • We can predict and test what might dissolve
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when we mix different things with water?
  • Why might some things dissolve and others not?
3Activity: Dissolving Detective (15 min)
investigation

Students will test different substances to see what dissolves in water

📝 Instructions:
  1. Label each container with a substance name
  2. Add equal amounts of water to each container
  3. Add a small amount of each substance
  4. Stir and observe what happens
  5. Record observations in science journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child stir and observe

Challenge: Predict solubility before testing, create a chart of results

4Closing (5 min)

Review findings and discuss what we learned about dissolving

📝 Review Questions:
  • Which substances dissolved completely?
  • Which substances stayed separate?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how to get dissolved substances back through evaporation!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Solubility is about how substances interact at a molecular level

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let child lead the investigation
  • Focus on the process, not perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if substances don't behave as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity, careful observation, willingness to record results

Extension Activities

  • Create a poster showing dissolving results
  • Experiment with water at different temperatures
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional science worksheets

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
