Learning Objectives

1

Understand multiplication as repeated addition

2

Practice multiplying small numbers using groups

3

Recognize God's ability to multiply our offerings

John 6:9-13

"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are these among so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed to those who were seated. Likewise also the fish, as much as they wanted.

John 6:9-13 (WEB)

Demonstrates divine multiplication and provision through small beginnings

📦 Materials Needed

  • Linking cubes
  • Multiplication arrays worksheet
  • World English Bible
  • Counters or small objects

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Review yesterday's array lesson and introduce today's biblical multiplication story

💭 Review Question: How can we show 3 x 4 using an array?
2Teaching (12 min)

Explore multiplication through the miracle of feeding the 5,000

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Jesus took a small offering and multiplied it
  • Five loaves became enough for 5,000 people
  • God can do amazing things with what we offer
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What small things can you offer to God?
  • How does multiplication help us understand God's provision?
3Activity: Loaves and Fishes Multiplication (14 min)
hands-on learning

Create multiplication groups representing the miracle

📝 Instructions:
  1. Use 5 linking cubes as 'loaves'
  2. Divide into groups of 50
  3. Show how 5 loaves can feed multiple groups
  4. Calculate total people fed using multiplication
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer cubes and smaller groups

Challenge: Calculate exact multiplication of food distribution

4Closing (4 min)

Review multiplication concepts and biblical lesson

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about multiplication today?
  • How did Jesus use multiplication to help people?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll play the Multiplication Match-Up Game

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

This lesson connects mathematical concepts with biblical narrative

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient with multiplication learning
  • Encourage creative thinking about God's provision
  • Use physical objects to demonstrate multiplication
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children may find repeated multiplication challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Understanding of grouping and basic multiplication concepts

Extension Activities

  • Create a storybook about the loaves and fishes miracle
