Characters: The Heart of Every Story
Distinguish between physical and character traits
Identify character traits using textual evidence
Understand how actions reveal character
“But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Yahweh sees not as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.'”
— 1 Samuel 16:7 (WEB)Teaches that true character is about inner qualities, not just outer appearances
Gather students in a circle. Ask them to share one kind thing someone did for them this week. Explain that today we'll be 'detectives' looking for character clues in our story.
Explain the difference between physical traits (what we see) and character traits (how we act). Use Wilbur from Charlotte's Web as an example.
Students will create a 'detective file' for Wilbur, finding evidence of his character traits in the text.
Simpler: Teacher helps students find traits
Challenge: Students find additional traits and compare with a partner
Share discoveries and discuss how characters reveal their true selves through actions.
Dear God, help us to look at people's hearts and be kind like Wilbur.
Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about Charlotte's special traits!
“He who loves purity of heart and has grace on his lips, the king will be his friend.”
— Proverbs 22:11 (WEB)🎯 Activity: Heart Trait Charades
