Learning Objectives

1

Distinguish between physical and character traits

2

Identify character traits using textual evidence

3

Understand how actions reveal character

1 Samuel 16:7

But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Yahweh sees not as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.'

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle. Ask them to share one kind thing someone did for them this week. Explain that today we'll be 'detectives' looking for character clues in our story.

💭 Review Question: What makes someone a good friend?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain the difference between physical traits (what we see) and character traits (how we act). Use Wilbur from Charlotte's Web as an example.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Physical traits are things we can see
  • Character traits show what's inside our heart
  • We learn about character through actions and words
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What are some of Wilbur's physical traits?
  • How does Wilbur show he is kind?
  • Why is it important to look at someone's actions?
3Activity: Trait Detective Worksheet (10 min)
hands-on

Students will create a 'detective file' for Wilbur, finding evidence of his character traits in the text.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide paper into two columns: Physical Traits and Character Traits
  2. Find and list at least 3 traits in each column
  3. Write a quote or example from the book for each trait
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher helps students find traits

Challenge: Students find additional traits and compare with a partner

4Closing (5 min)

Share discoveries and discuss how characters reveal their true selves through actions.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about Wilbur today?
  • How are character traits different from physical traits?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, help us to look at people's hearts and be kind like Wilbur.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about Charlotte's special traits!

Proverbs 22:11
