Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle and explain that today we'll play a fun game reviewing story elements. Remind them that understanding how stories work helps us better appreciate the stories we read, including Bible stories.

💭 Review Question: What are the three main story elements we've learned about this year?
2Teaching (10 min)

Quickly review the definitions of character, setting, and plot. Explain that characters are the people or animals in a story, setting is where and when the story happens, and plot is what happens in the story.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Characters can be good or bad, just like people in the Bible
  • Settings help us understand the context of a story
  • Plot shows us how characters solve problems
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you think of a Bible story with clear characters, setting, and plot?
  • How do story elements help us understand what's happening?
3Activity: Story Element Sorting Challenge (10 min)
game

Students will work in teams to sort story element cards into the correct categories on a poster board.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide class into teams of 3-4 students
  2. Give each team a set of mixed story element cards
  3. Teams must sort cards into Character, Setting, and Plot columns
  4. First team to correctly sort all cards wins
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide color-coded cards or visual cues

Challenge: Add more complex story element descriptions

4Closing (5 min)

Discuss what they learned about story elements and how understanding these helps us enjoy and understand stories better.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is a character?
  • What makes a good setting?
  • How does plot move a story forward?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving us the ability to understand and enjoy stories. Help us learn to listen and understand your teachings, just like we learn to understand stories.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore theme and point of view in stories!
