Proverbs 18:15

The heart of the discerning gets knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

Proverbs 18:15 (WEB)

Just as this verse encourages seeking knowledge, comparing texts helps us understand information more completely

📦 Materials Needed

  • Large paper or whiteboard
  • Colored markers
  • Two short passages about similar topics
  • Venn diagram template
  • Pencils

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that today we'll be detectives, comparing two different texts to learn more about a topic

💭 Review Question: What does it mean to compare two things?
2Teaching (10 min)

Demonstrate how to create a Venn diagram by drawing two overlapping circles. Explain how the left circle is for unique information from the first text, the right circle for unique information from the second text, and the overlapping middle section for information that is the same.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Comparing helps us understand a topic more deeply
  • Not all information is the same in different texts
  • Looking carefully helps us learn more
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What might be different about two texts on the same topic?
  • Why is it helpful to read more than one text about something?
3Activity: Text Detective Venn Diagram (10 min)
hands-on

Students will work in pairs to create a Venn diagram comparing two short passages about animals or Bible stories

📝 Instructions:
  1. Choose two passages
  2. Read both texts carefully
  3. Draw a Venn diagram
  4. Write unique information in outer circles
  5. Write shared information in the middle
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher provides pre-selected texts and helps fill in diagram

Challenge: Students select their own texts to compare

4Closing (5 min)

Share Venn diagrams and discuss what we learned

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was the most interesting thing you discovered?
  • How did comparing texts help you understand more?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving us minds that can learn and discover. Help us to always be curious and seek knowledge.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll look at how different people can tell the same story differently

Proverbs 18:15

The heart of the discerning gets knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
