Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that paragraphs are like little stories within a bigger story. Each paragraph has its own main message that helps us understand the whole text.

💭 Review Question: Who can tell me what a main idea is?
2Teaching (10 min)

Demonstrate how to find a paragraph's main idea by looking at the first or last sentence, and identifying the key points that support that idea.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Main ideas tell us what the paragraph is mostly about
  • Supporting details give more information about the main idea
  • Look for repeated words or themes
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a good main idea?
  • How do details help us understand the main idea?
  • Why is it important to understand what we read?
3Activity: Paragraph Detective (10 min)
hands-on

Students will work in pairs to identify main ideas and supporting details in a provided informational text.

📝 Instructions:

  4. Create a graphic organizer showing how details connect to main ideas
🔄 Variations:

4Closing (5 min)

Review what we learned about finding main ideas in paragraphs

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is a main idea?
