📦 Materials Needed

  • Syllable division chart
  • Colored index cards
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Word list

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Introduce syllable types by explaining how words are like little houses for sounds. Some syllable 'houses' have locked doors (closed syllables) and some have open doors (open syllables).

💭 Review Question: Who can tell me what a syllable is?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain closed syllables have a short vowel sound and end with a consonant (like 'cat'), while open syllables have a long vowel sound and end with a vowel (like 'go').

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Closed syllables sound short
  • Open syllables sound long
  • Every syllable needs at least one vowel
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What sound does the vowel make in 'cat'?
  • How is 'go' different from 'got'?
3Activity: Syllable Sort Castle (10 min)
hands-on

Create a 'castle' sorting activity where students divide words into closed and open syllable sections

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a castle with two towers
  2. Label one tower 'Closed Syllables' and one 'Open Syllables'
  3. Sort words into correct towers
  4. Circle the vowel in each word to check the sound
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide pre-sorted words

Challenge: Students create their own words to sort

4Closing (5 min)

Review what we learned about syllable types

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes a syllable 'closed'?
  • What makes a syllable 'open'?
  • Why are syllables important?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for helping us learn and understand new things about language.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore more complex vowel patterns!
