Gather students in a circle and explain that today we'll learn about sharing our opinions in writing. Ask students to share what they think an opinion is.
Introduce the three main parts of an opinion piece: introduction (state your opinion), reasons (explain why), and conclusion (summarize). Use examples like 'My favorite book is...' or 'I believe playing outside is important because...'
Students will complete a graphic organizer showing an opinion and three supporting reasons
Simpler: Provide sentence starters for each section
Challenge: Add a counterargument to address
Share a few student examples and discuss how they followed the opinion writing structure
