📦 Materials Needed

  • Clay or playdough
  • Small plastic animals
  • Paper plates
  • Seeds (optional)
  • Picture books about early farming

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and ask them to pretend they are hunters following an animal. Make tracking and hunting motions. Then discuss how challenging it would be to find food every single day.

💭 Review Question: How do you think people got food before grocery stores?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain how early humans moved around following animal herds and gathering wild plants. Then they discovered they could plant seeds and grow food in one place.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Hunting required constant movement
  • Farming allowed people to stay in one place
  • Growing food was more reliable than hunting
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What would make someone want to stay in one place?
  • How might farming make life easier?
  • What kinds of plants do you think they first grew?
3Activity: Create a Mini Farm (10 min)
hands-on

Students will use clay to create a small farming scene showing the difference between hunting and farming life.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide paper plate into two sections
  2. On one side, create a hunting scene with moving animals
  3. On the other side, create a farming scene with planted crops
  4. Use playdough or clay to make tiny figures and landscape
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher provides more pre-made elements

Challenge: Students research specific crops and animals from early civilizations

4Closing (5 min)

Reflect on how God gave humans the ability to learn, grow, and solve problems through agriculture.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was different about life when people started farming?
  • How might farming help people take care of each other?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving humans creativity to grow food and take care of each other. Help us be grateful for the food you provide.

Coming up: Tomorrow we will learn about where the first farms were located!

Proverbs 12:11
