Christianity and Rome
Understand how early Christians faced persecution
Learn about Christian courage in difficult times
Recognize God's strength in believers' challenges
“So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for Jesus' name.”
— Acts 5:41 (WEB)Shows how early Christians viewed persecution as an honor
Gather students in a circle and ask about times they've been brave. Explain that today we'll learn about people who were very brave because of their love for Jesus.
Early Christians lived in a time when believing in Jesus could mean being hurt or killed. Roman leaders didn't like Christians because they wouldn't worship the Roman emperor or false gods.
Students will create a personal 'courage shield' representing how God gives strength
Simpler: Pre-draw shield outline for students
Challenge: Include a written story about Christian courage on back of shield
Remind students that God is always with us, even when things are hard
Dear Jesus, thank you for giving us courage. Help us be brave and trust in You, no matter what happens.
Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how Christianity became accepted in Rome
“For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7 (WEB)🎯 Activity: Courage Chant - Students stand and repeat verse with bold motions
Early Christian persecution was a significant part of church history, demonstrating incredible faith
Children might feel scared hearing about difficult experiences
Expressions of understanding about courage and faith
Great job completing today's lesson!
