Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students around a large map. Point out the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Explain that this is where the first human civilization began.

2Teaching (10 min)

The Sumerians were incredible inventors who created many things we still use today. They built amazing cities with tall tower-like temples called ziggurats. These were special places where they worshiped their gods and performed important ceremonies.

  • They lived in city-states like Ur
  • They were skilled farmers and traders
